How It Works

Projects That Persist

Work happens inside a named project. Your Inventor Input, Extended Claim Set, Final Claims, drawings, language, and passcode are saved automatically and carry over whether you generate the whole document at once or build it step by step—switching modes never re-asks for input. Rename, duplicate, or delete a project from the project bar at any time.

Two Drafting Modes

Web Drafter offers two switchable ways to produce the same document from the same project:

• One-Shot mode: a single submission generates the complete specification (up to around 30 minutes). The result renders as editable, auto-growing text sections directly on the page—not just a file to download. Ask the built-in Section Chat to explain or revise any section, review its proposed edit in an accept/reject/reset panel, then apply it. Two downloads are always available: your current edits as they stand on screen, and the original file exactly as generated.
• Step-by-Step mode: the same document, built one of 13 sections at a time. Generate, hand-edit, or chat-revise each section independently, with a status of Pending, Completed, Edited, or Needs Review. If you hand-edit a section that a later section depends on, running that later section lets you choose whether it should build from your edited text or the original AI output. A final Finalize pass polishes the assembled document.

A generated document includes:

• Title: Short and appropriate
• Background: Properly framed technical context that does not hint at the invention
• Summary: Object of the invention, claims expressed as aspects and embodiments, advantages of all claims
• Figure Descriptions: Coordinated with your uploaded drawings
• Detailed Description: Thorough embodiment descriptions, including all embodiments, the description of all figures in the right context, all examples derivable from the invention disclosure, prophetic examples (including a warning to the patent attorney)
• Term Definitions and Advantages: Extended claim interpretation and a dedicated advantages section
• List of reference numbers: Extracted from your extended claim set
• Claims: As provided
• Abstract: <150 words

Edit, Chat, and Review Before You Download

Whichever mode you use, sections are not locked once generated. Open Section Chat on any section to ask a question or request a revision; the AI's proposed change appears as a tracked edit you can accept, reject, or reset section by section—never applied silently. A generation started in One-Shot mode keeps running in the background even if you log out or switch to another project, and a resume banner picks it back up so you never lose a draft in progress.

Flexible Drawing Input

Upload drawings as Word, PowerPoint, PDF, or image files, with a substantially higher size allowance than a single figure used to require. A single .docx with one image per figure is still auto-extracted automatically. For any other source, or when you want manual control, a box-define crop tool lets you drag a box around each figure directly in the browser to define Fig. 1, Fig. 2, and so on. Either path then:

• Analyzes figure content and identifies elements
• Generates figure descriptions with proper reference numerals
• Coordinates figure references throughout the specification
• Ensures consistency between drawings and written description

Custom Document Formats

Expert and team accounts can tailor the document structure per project without touching the default pipeline: add custom sections with their own title and drafting instructions, hide optional built-in sections (Term Definitions, Experiments, Prophetic Examples), reorder the final document, and layer extra instructions onto any built-in section. Save the result as a named, reusable format in a per-account library, or upload an example patent to have it analyzed into a proposed starting format—always presented for review, never applied automatically.

What input format do I need?

What output format does Web Drafter produce?

A properly formatted Word document (.docx) that you can optionally password-protect. Before you download anything, the generated sections are editable directly in the browser, with AI chat and accept/reject review available on each one.
